Incredibly, mind-bogglingly, beyond all belief, the Democratic Party seems to be rapidly coalescing behind Harris as a consensus choice.
If that is actually what’s happening, it’s the best damn political news I’ve heard all year.

@inthehands I can't believe how, through the course of this afternoon, I've gone from stress eating despair to, I don't know, hopeful?
And I just heard from my wife that in the last 5 hours, Act Blue says they've raised 20 odd million in small donations. A wee bit from me, too.
Well hot damn

@inthehands I am sort of surprised the DNC didn’t immediately form a circle and start shooting.
I mean
Pity poor whatshisface from Texas
@lizakowski
I’m choosing to bask in the good news for an evening. Long fight ahead.
@inthehands It's good to see, but initially supporting the ticket is also an easy call.
I guess we need any good news we can find. And this is a step, however small, on the happy path.
@inthehands he not get the "No, actually we're doing a unity, today" memo?

This welcome coalescing behind Harris is so swift, so widespread, and so decisive, I can’t help but wonder whether Biden didn’t make this decision weeks ago, and spent the time consolidating a lightning-smooth handoff before announcing.
If so — and it’s wild speculation, granted — but •if• so, that’s a hell of a play.
Similar thought here from @sjuvonen:
@inthehands earlier today I had a similar thought. Was mentally picturing him putting the pieces in place over the last few weeks and saying to himself “not yet…not yet…not yet…not yet…NOW!” Like him or hate him, he’s a *very* good politician who has been at this game for a really long time.
@inthehands that seems likely, but why wouldn’t they unite to supports Biden himself? What happened behind the scenes? Did Biden intentionally not bring his best to the debate to set this in motion?
@ShadSterling
No, no, I’m not suggesting anything •that• tin-foil-hat-ish. I’m just suggesting he saw the writing on the wall, and got his ducks in a row to avoid an intra-party meltdown before making his move.
@c20d
Exactly this. I was a Warren and Harris supporter back in 2019-2020, but when Biden went on to win the nomination (after seeming to be DOA at the start of the primary), I remarked that his superpower is being underestimated.
Tally is now updated: 173 have endorsed Harris, 113 haven’t said yet.
Check the list! Check your state! Light a fire under the uncommitted! We are on the cusp of avoiding a Democratic intra-party meltdown here, and dammit, if we do, this election is winnable.

@blogdiva
Mine too, House and Senate. No gov yet, but he’s the political equivalent of wet cardboard. He won’t say anything until there’s no possibility of conflict.
@inthehands my congressman endorsed. he better, LOL
@CMDoran
Yeah, I think Guardian did too. Reporters struggling to keep up.
@inthehands Politico has Whitmer on endorsement list I think.
@inthehands That is my take as well. It's unfounded speculation but it matches the available facts.
Also, waiting until *after* the Sunday NYT hit newsstands was a power move. Their headline of the day was something about "ailing, isolated, Biden dithers." His actions today and the response have been the opposite of that. Their last three weeks of reportage are now irrelevant, and it's clear they never had a window into the Biden campaign at all.
@inthehands you mean like an effective politician?
@freeformz
that is exactly what I mean
@blogdiva
You mean the NYPD isn’t falling over themselves to endorse her? But all the reply guys on Twitter told me she’s a cop! 🙄
@inthehands Leticia James endorse. have no idea bout Hotchul and Adams but am sure they're waiting for the NYPD gang leaders to tell them what to do 😒
@inthehands shit, i dont think they even endorsed Leticia James. only the Black & Latino brotherhood; cuz the main 'union' is so racist they have to have a separate one.
@blogdiva
NYPD really is an extra special flavor of ACAB

@blogdiva @Julie
That was just an astonishing self-face-punch
@Julie @inthehands thanks. she irritates the hell out of me since that "cops need to drive into the city" bullshit about congestion pricing.
@blogdiva @inthehands Hochul endorsed.
@Simplicator
Yup, agreed. Speculation, but…
@inthehands Huh. I think something like that happened with him supposedly getting out in front of Obama on support for gay marriage
@inthehands I have no inside knowledge but I heard that they refreshed some polling that hadn't been done in a while to clarify where they stood and that Biden getting COVID may have helped clarify his thinking on whether he wanted to keep busting his ass trying to right the campaign, only to win another 4 years of struggle, or just take a victory lap and retire. Clearly he coordinated with many many Dems though because all the press releases and statements today were not _reactions_ to news.
@inthehands My Rep has not endorsed yet. Letter sent using @resistbot.
