cool_boy_mew (coolboymew@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 19-Jul-2024 23:02:06 JST cool_boy_mew @NonPlayableClown @matty @hfaust I fucking hate bitlocker. Absolutely nobody asked it for to trigger the recovery code when the "hardware" changes (this can include a BIOS update, BTW), I just want it encrypted bro Sick Sun likes this. -

Here's the fun part: Windows push BIOS update by itself now
In the old world, as far as I'm aware, BIOS updates used to be a thing you didn't fuck with unless you had a weird unexplained problem with software, but it was more often hardware related
Now it all gets updated automatically if you don't have an MDM/UEM platform picking and choosing the patchesSick Sun likes this. -

casey is remote (realcaseyrollins@noauthority.social)'s status on Saturday, 20-Jul-2024 01:35:34 JST casey is remote @coolboymew @NonPlayableClown @matty @hfaust To be fair, it's pretty secure. It can keep people from ripping out a hard drive and throwing it into custom hardware.
But it should be customizable and granular, like if orgs don't want #BIOS updates to trigger #Bitlocker, it shouldn't have to.

cool_boy_mew (coolboymew@shitposter.world)'s status on Saturday, 20-Jul-2024 01:35:34 JST cool_boy_mew @realcaseyrollins @NonPlayableClown @matty @hfaust The problem with that is that the odds are extremely low to begin with
What are the odds of...
-Some dude stealing it
-Dude is actually knowledgable/sells it to very specific hackers
-They have special encryption breaking hardware
If they do, what good will the recovery key be in the first place?
Having a recovery key is a very good idea, having it trigger because of a BIOS update is a very bad idea however. This should have been an optional option, which there isn't as far as I'm aware -
