@brokenshakles @plotinus_enjoyer What really trips people up in the Pathfinder games is that they play their wizards and sorcerers like DPS 'blasters', when in reality that is what alchemists and kineticists are for.
Your primary casters should be used for terrain/crowd control and buffing/debuffing first. Damage is an afterthought and is fight specific.

@TrevorGoodchild @brokenshakles @plotinus_enjoyer too many games simplify the group working together to "everyone do damage to bad guy" and so it turns magic uses into magic archers.
In games where there are powerful control option it's always smartest to have balance between characters so one bad roll doesn't destroy your only option for success.

@TrevorGoodchild @plotinus_enjoyer Yep, learned that in the old Gold Box Dos games, many which had relevant AOE movement debuffs. Web is a lifesaver in the Dark Sun setting.

@TrevorGoodchild I intensely dislike any and all movement debuffs because in the majority of games I rely a lot on movement to avoid damage
This is also why I prefer weapons with high single shot damage so I can dart in, deal massive damage then retreat

@plotinus_enjoyer Movement debuffs are a fantastic way to design a fight that challenges both slow moving heavy hitters and lightning-fast 'glass cannons'
This is why the first mid-level spell amateurs learn at the corresponding levels is a blaster spell like 'fireball'. Experienced players go for either 'fly' or 'freedom of movement'

@plotinus_enjoyer I'll poast all the cheevos when I get done traveling (may be some time)
It's the 'Lord of Nothing' DLC for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. That's the umbral dragon boss in the Shadow Realm. Considered to be the hardest fight in the entire expansion, because whoever did the tactics and enemy AI ran the dragon exactly the way a killer DM would. Which is to say:
>Use of flyby attacks rather than just standing still and letting itself be surrounded and wailed on
>Casting terrain controlling spells on the ground (grease) to neutralize your party's summoned creatures and your heavy hitters with poor reflex saves
>Actually well done dragon-fear effect, forces you to think about ways to counter it as your party members who fall victim to it are useless for the fight
>Two separate breath weapons, one of which does Strength drain and can blind you (this can one-shot your squishy party members)
>Undead adds that buff it have to be taken out by DPS quickly
Probably one of the best tuned fights Owlcat has done in the series

@TrevorGoodchild So I'm guessing this is the type of enemy that is not only very mobile and hard-hitting, but also restricts movement and applies powerful debuffs

@plotinus_enjoyer Strength drain (all ability drain, really) is one of the nastiest debuffs in a D&D based system. Weak characters with a score knocked to 3 or below will be unable to move due to encumbrance rules.
Once your score reaches 0 you die

@ddj @TrevorGoodchild @sickburnbro Total aside, but choosing to play the game of life as a White male these days is the kind of thing people who play on suicide mode do.

@sickburnbro Back when I was actually asked to run games I never understood why people complained about 'broken' player classes. In any kind of tabletop with half-decent mechanics you can find a counter to any munchkin, powergamer or min/maxer that stacks DPS. Overspecialization is always crippling and can be worked around

@TrevorGoodchild @sickburnbro DM's word is law and when running a game, my favorite car was my GM Fiat.
I'd even let the players know after making a ruling, you hear squealing tires and you see taillights of a horseless carriage driving away from you.
Players: But we're in a Dungeon...
Me: Did I stutter?
