55% of people on bikes in Utrecht are women, yet only 30% in London and Portland. Presenting to the Portland Bicycle Advisory committee right now, @CathyTuttle on the survey of women on biking. 😒 Close passes inflicted on women 4x as frequently as men??? #BikeTooter#pdxBikes
According to this fairly rigorous study in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2017, other factors equal, women on bikes were 3.8 times more likely to be close-passed, aka "punishment pass" than men.
#notAllMen but a notable handful of them on bikes are not without blame here, delivering 4-5% of the harassment ... which kinda corresponds to the bike mode share 😒
"Bicycles, #Gender, and Risk: #Drivers Behaviors When Passing [people on bikes] ... measuring passing distance on a minimum of 400 passing events on each type of roadway... Vehicle passing distances ranged from a mean of 90 inches on the #bollards -protected bike lane to lows of 62-63 inches on roadways with no facilities, shoulders only, and [ #paintIsNotProtection ]" (that's american for almost 1m difference)
Correction: that is lower than 30% women in #Portland (of people on bikes) and it drops to 18% in east Portland! A key factor that changes this is #ProtectedBikeLanes / #BanCars from the bike lanes at least. "We need to be doing a lot more very wide spaces for people on bikes."
