Facebook also tried @facebook.com e-mail address for all users at one point, which they also killed.
FB's XMPP never federated. Google's did, but they silently killed federation around .. 2013 or 2014 I think. Pissed a lot of people off.arcanicanis likes this. -

Microsoft isn't the only one with an embrace, extend, extinguish strategy. -

I dont understand the underlying tech, but the smart money says they see the fediverse as an eventual threat because of how decentralized it is, so they are making a shiny new version with backdoor tools to centralize and control
