There is no single site or app that is "Mastodon." This isn't like Twitter, or Facebook.
Mastodon.social isn't "Mastodon" anymore than Gmail is "email." Gmail is one very popular email server, Mastodon.social is one very popular #Mastodon server.
Same goes for mastodon.online, mstdn.social, mas.to, etc.
This seems to be tripping up a lot of new people during the #twittermigration to the #fediverse

@joncollinsdev @mike OK! So fundamentally Mastodon is a platform that's built on ActivityPub. The point I'm struggling to communicate with others is that you're NOT really joining Mastodon, you're connecting to ActivityPubVerse, yes? Hence the "join on the fediverse?" Which I also kind of don't like because there could very well be (and maybe already are?) other non-ActivityPub "fediverses." I'm liking the comparison to email services more than anything really.

Honestly a great analogy! A lot of future technology and platforms are likely to be open source and decentralized. As more users begin to enter these types of platforms and become adept - friction should hopefully decrease.

The orbital model of the atom is wrong, but useful to understand both the parts of an atom and to lay the foundations of chemistry. We can get to wavefunctions later.

All really great points. I think it’s also important to consider that for some people - mastodon is just NOT going to be their cup of tea. Being a software dev - mastodon is VERY appealing to me. But I also must concede that no amount of explaining will convince certain friends and colleagues to leave their comfy and “easy” social spaces for the off the map “here there be dragons” of Mastodon.
