At a restaurant in Seattle.
Bill includes 20% service charge on top of menu prices, 85% of which is allocated to the staff and 15% of which is retained by the restaurant.
This (and tax) is applied before a food and beverage credit that will cover 80% of the pre-tax total.
I normally tip 18-20% of the pre-tax total in the US.
I am confused by this new form of bill obfuscation, and have tipped 10% on top. I have no idea if I'm being cheap. 😵💫

@ryanc was in SeaTac in April and saw no such. Are you in a group that exceeds half a dozen or so? That's the only time I see mandatory charges like that. It's typically listed at the bottom of the menu in fine print and should also be in the dinner bill you get before giving your payment. It's supposed to replace the tip at that point. I still leave something on the table. 10% is gracious.

@ryanc Yikes! Well that's news to me. I did a little digging and found this. Seems it's a restaurant by restaurant choice. The article is 2 years old. Not sure what method is "winning." Glad is wasn't like that at Sharp's in SeaTac. Highly recommend if you're into roasted meat. It's right outside the Airport across the street from the Doubletree hotel.
