help_helper (help_helper@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 28-Jun-2024 22:40:51 JST help_helper The bachelor buttons are starting to bloom and the little bees are pleased. these came from seeds I saved off ones that volunteered last year from the 2022 flowers that I grew from seed 🥹 they’re so easy to grow, they’re really happy to be here. They smell nice too. #bloomscrolling -

BowserNoodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 28-Jun-2024 22:45:47 JST BowserNoodle ☦️ @help_helper @immobile Supposedly "corn" used to be the word for the most popular grain crop rather than the name for maize 🌽 and that's changed over the last century or so because of US influence. It makes sense why cornflower refers to rye in Europe. -

immobile (immobile@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 28-Jun-2024 22:45:48 JST immobile @help_helper Oh, it's called also cornflower. I like the bachelor's button name more.
We call it as ryeflower, or actually rye beauty (ruiskaunokki) in Finland.

help_helper (help_helper@poa.st)'s status on Friday, 28-Jun-2024 22:45:48 JST help_helper @immobile I never knew that!! I’ve heard of cornflower and have seen it famously printed on vintage Corningware dishes at thrift stores but I never put it together that it’s the same flower (and I’m also just now realizing the name play there - Corningware, cornflower. those clever bastards). Rye beauty is a great name, I might start using that. Today I Learned. -

BowserNoodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 29-Jun-2024 01:08:04 JST BowserNoodle ☦️ @help_helper @immobile I bet it is. Might cause acid trips or something though. Isn't fouled rye the source of trippy molds? -

immobile (immobile@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 29-Jun-2024 01:08:05 JST immobile @BowsacNoodle @help_helper And I think rye is more common in North Europe/Scandinavia, the rest of Europe have wheat.
In that perspective I started to check the name in another European countries.
Sweden: Blåklint - Blue ???? (could not find translation to klint) Denmark: Kornblomst - Grainflower Norway: Kornblom - Grainflower Island: Garðakornblóm - Yard grain flower Estonia: Rukkilill - Ryeflower Germany: Kornblume - Grainflower Hungary: Búzavirág - Wheatflower
I think we can see the pattern here, grain.
