      I can start! Such a bold choice to make something this attention-grabbing the main battle theme but it really works.

      @apophis man crpg music is so different from jrpg music. I guess it makes sense because crpgs are closer in form to "tactics" as a genre and don't have the same need for peppy random encounter music

      @clarity this was my extremely close second choice

      it might be a not-even-that-extremely close first choice if i control for nostalgia

      first pass at describing the major genres of normal rpg battle music:

      - The bland impatient "epic" music every modern jrpg uses. feels like it's trying to sell you something.

      - Upbeat & energetic but not urgent. danceable. melody-driven. maybe funky. e.g. Delta Rune, Sea of Stars

      - Driving, tense but not overwhelming. A constant sense of pressure. e.g. Final Fantasy VI, Pokemon

      - Groovy & atmospheric. e.g. Chrono Trigger, Earthbound.

      multiple people reminding me that CRPGs exist. I forgot because I don't play them! They have very different music than the jrpgs-and-similar that I'm thinking about. CRPGs, being in the tactics design space where encounters are longer and more involved, tend to prefer something more ambient that won't distract you.

      @SyntheticAutumn god great question. nominally the second usually but persona songs are kind of in their own class

      @clarity How do we classify Persona music? i’m thinking the second category?

      @DesReploid man I've always wanted to play these games. I should pick up the switch port.

      Vocals in battle music is always such a great move.

      @clarity
      The World Ends With You cycles its battle themes, playing them semi-random and all of them have a weird rock-punk-y feel to them that sometimes dips into other genres like hip-hop, pop, or metal. This one is just one of my favourites.

      TWEWY and its sequel just have one of the coolest aesthetics I have ever seen in any RPG serues, and it has fantastic music to match that aesthetic.

      Also sometimes their music are randomly about very adult topics and I love that
