@semitones @futurebird @martinhowitt Don't know about extensions, but I think both the @phanpy and @elk web clients does this. At least the first one.

Semitones (semitones@tiny.tilde.website)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jun-2024 05:44:35 JST Semitones @futurebird @martinhowitt I *really* wish there was an official Chrome/Firefox extension for Mastodon that let you interact with other people's Mastodon servers as if you were on your own.
1. Click on link -> visit the other person's server
2. Click "like" or "reply", etc
3. Extension seamlessly takes these actions using your own server.
*. (Would be better if no extension was needed)No idea if that's technically feasible, but this is 100% why I prefer using Mastodon on my phone vs the web.

myrmepropagandist (futurebird@sauropods.win)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jun-2024 05:44:36 JST myrmepropagandist I can think of three people this happened to, one is back on X, another no longer uses social media and the last is on blueSky.
Cool fun people, but I can see why they decided it was "too confusing" and "dead."
These are only the people I kept track of, I suspect there are 1000s of dead accounts that are created due to this totally confusing aspect of the interface. Happily this only seems to happen on the web, and the phone apps are more popular.

myrmepropagandist (futurebird@sauropods.win)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jun-2024 05:44:37 JST myrmepropagandist I had more than one friend, who I convinced to try mastodon. Trying to give them a good experience I'd check on them & respond to their posts.
They'd say: "I never saw your replies"Turned out in each case they clicked a link & found they were "logged out" (on a different server) so sign up for that server, then another and another... on every server they had an empty account and felt alone.
We need quote-boost to stop this. An in-fedi link should stay on your home server.

myrmepropagandist (futurebird@sauropods.win)'s status on Thursday, 20-Jun-2024 05:44:38 JST myrmepropagandist Here is a screenshot of what I see. And this is even more wild because links to YouTube, and to tumblr and many other sites will show an image if there is one and a short summary of the post being linked.
But if you link to the fedi it's kind of censored down to just a cryptic link (that will take you to a different server where you can't post or reply nearly always)
It's almost adversarial design to avoid anything "quote boost like"
