I’m about as isolated and insulated as one could be to weather just about any catastrophe you can think of.

If not, I’m not terribly worried. We’ve been off grid for almost a year already. Once I’m finished developing the land this year, we could get away with almost never leaving. Honestly might not have to leave at all, unless for something super niche.

I live in a pretty rural place but I'm only 10 minutes from what could be considered a major city. I've stocked some cans of nonperishables but my wife and I want to learn how to farm, get in better shape, and other ways to independently thrive. It's good to hear your setup is solid, best of luck to you and the family 🤙🏻

You can make foods that last a LOT longer than canning, it's fairly fool proof for food safety since it's dry, and it can take up less space and weight. You can buy the mylar pouches like they use for Capri Sun drinks made for freeze dryers for fairly cheap as well. My buddy has freeze dried everything just for fun and even stuff like homemade spaghetti sauce comes out great.

You must be able to replace your storage, and a year should be all you need.
If you rely on several years of food storage, it will eventually run out.
Things you can/should stock up on are things like salt, if you don’t have access to a natural source. Although there are weeds that harbor tons of salt, and you should know which those are to your locality.

I remember one poast stating that if you have prepared and supplied yourself for years none of it will matter if you don't have the means to defend your claim. The fact that I live ten minutes away from a culturally enriched city is usually at the front of my mind. Where I live is peaceful, but I have to consider the urban waste that could spill over at ten minutes notice.
