TIL that Junteenth is an actual holiday in the U.S.. I lived in this country for 27 years and it's the first time I hear about it.

@zaitcev I only heard about it a few years ago, it was mostly a Southern thing but now the media has made it bigger everywhere I guess.

I asked a black friend if either, none, or one of Junteenth and Kwanzaa were fake holidays. His answer was that they had community parades for Junteenth when he grew up (in Houston, IIRC) but nobody heard about Kwanzaa. So Junteenth is definitely real, in fact a volk tradition.

@mrsaturday @zaitcev I should not have generalized about the entire midwest. I personally never heard about it, even once, until maybe ten years ago.

@sun @zaitcev Not even KC or St. Louis? I kind of wonder why it was a bigger deal in Omaha, then. For the longest time I thought it was just a festival for North O's black heritage since they never explained it beyond "they have a parade on the third weekend in June".
