When you see someone who feels such a strong connection to a country, that they will consistently deny that the country has behaved in the most brutal of ways regardless of blatant evidence, you have to ask yourself if that sense of connection has served as an avenue toward becoming completely reality challenged.

timberwraith (timberwraith@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 12-Jun-2024 09:33:19 JST timberwraith And when a person pushes further and says that this hallowed place of dreams and ideals matters more than the death and suffering it has become entwined with, that its sacredness and sense of comfort and safety that this place provides is worth the lives of so many and the suffering of so many...
One must ask where there person's sense of humanity has escaped to?
Would you feel this way if it was your family and neighbors who were perishing under the horrors of this wave of death?

timberwraith (timberwraith@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 12-Jun-2024 09:33:19 JST timberwraith If you can not face the reality of what that same suffering and death would mean if it was inflicted upon the people you love and care about, again, you are among the reality challenged.
Your dream of safety in an unjust and war ridden nationalism is bound in a denial of the brutality that it all rests upon.
Turning from reality for the falsehood of an ideal does not excuse the brutality you have turned a blind eye to.
It never does.

Some lives matter more to you than others.
Human life becomes cheaper and more easily discarded when they are not among the assortment of humans you feel closer to.
And you're okay with that.
The waving of a flag and an identity of tradition and common history matter more than a pile of dead bodies when the bodies belong to unwanted and uncared-for strangers.
Strangers who happened to live on the wrong side of a political line upon the land.

timberwraith (timberwraith@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 12-Jun-2024 09:33:19 JST timberwraith You are the living image of a human fault which has played out across time, geography, and countless cultures.
You embody sentiments which have long led us to cheapen each other's lives and smile as our sword tips enter another's midsection.
The blood of a stranger is trivial.
Except when it's our own.

But that passion, commitment, and heart felt connection is not worth tens of thousands of lives and the suffering of hundreds of thousands of others.
It becomes a selfish escapist daydream bound in the pain and destruction of people who live under very real violence and cruelty.
This is wrong. It is profoundly unjust.
