Jimmy Buffett Fanatic (jimmybuffettfanaccount@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 14:04:13 JST Jimmy Buffett Fanatic @Griffith Everyone was “right”, the grandparent generation was right when they said it. they neglected to mention that their brains were already fried by tv from a very young age but they made a half hearted attempt to have their kids do as they say not as they do. Rather than be hypocritical like their parents, and frankly because to a lot of them it feels like trying to be a fish raising your kids without water, this generation of parents has accepted that their brains are fried, they don’t know how or aren’t physically able (if both parents are forced to work for economic reasons then the kids are going to end up in front of a screen for at least part of the day) to raise kids who aren’t like themselves. And they also are making a (probably correct) calculation that unless they run off to join a Luddite commune their kids won’t have any friends and be stunted socially if they aren’t allowed to go on the internet and consume the screens. To do so would be to remove them from almost the entirety of what they have that passes for culture. To use another water metaphor: theres a factory up the river that’s runoff is carcinogenic, it’ll eventually make everyone sick and die after many years of drinking it, everyone knows this nobody is being fooled, but everyone still drinks the water because it’s the only source of water and nobody can afford to leave. -

BowserNoodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 14:05:52 JST BowserNoodle ☦️ @jimmybuffettfanaccount @Griffith Where's that Ted K quote about the dangers of technology accidentally enslaving us? We can debate the accidental part, and there's plenty of reasons to do so, but it doesn't matter if everyone is coping with the addiction in some way. -

Jimmy Buffett Fanatic (jimmybuffettfanaccount@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 14:53:35 JST Jimmy Buffett Fanatic @bleedingphoenix @Griffith I guess it’s two different issues, parents today do seem to try and do some minimizing of screens as you go younger and younger but i couldn’t tell you the last time I saw 15 year old kids without a cell phone in public, and for teenage girls social media is about as bad for their fragile psyches as hard drugs, it’s not much better for boys, and parents all know that but shrug and give them phones anyway because they’re all social media (and porn) addicts and they fully expect their kids to be too. WhiteExodite (bleedingphoenix@wolfgirl.bar)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 14:53:36 JST WhiteExodite @jimmybuffettfanaccount @Griffith maybe it varies, but my family has never had to plug in at a young age. we're all zoomers but we each got a phone around when we were about the age to drive a car. no one was bullied for it either. things may be turning around but my brother is just now getting a phone as a sophomore in high school (and even then it has restrictions on what can be browsed) -

BroDrillard (brodrillard@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 15:03:14 JST BroDrillard I see people walking their dogs, completely oblivious to their surroundings because they're lost in their phones. It's probably the one time in their day when they could connect to nature, but they ignore even this opportunity.
I have listened to audiobooks or podcasts on long walks, but at least I look at nature while doing it.BowserNoodle ☦️ likes this. -

EdBoatConnoisseur (edboatconnoisseur@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 15:03:15 JST EdBoatConnoisseur @bleedingphoenix @jimmybuffettfanaccount @Griffith @BowsacNoodle It was the same way back when tv first became athing and back when internet did too, is never the devices fault, it is always the parent's full fault for being fucking useless as parents and having to leverage the education of their children to entities that are not them, one example is the parents that think working more overtime is showing love to their kids better than spending time with their children.

Jimmy Buffett Fanatic (jimmybuffettfanaccount@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 15:03:16 JST Jimmy Buffett Fanatic @BowsacNoodle @Griffith It’s this shitty normgroid boomer comic image except the oddly endowed mother on the right is such a statistic anomaly as to basically not even exist and the mother on the left knows the answer to her own question and isn’t acting on it because she has little means and no incentive to do so. -

WhiteExodite (bleedingphoenix@wolfgirl.bar)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jun-2024 15:03:16 JST WhiteExodite @jimmybuffettfanaccount @Griffith @BowsacNoodle it's really (as always) an issue of parenting instead of le technology. I work with so many elderly customers and it is incredible how hooked they are in devices they barely understand, and soccer moms chatting away on the phone while their kid sits unattended watching cocomelon at full blast. -
