Are you using Mastodon through a computer?

Do you wish there was a multi-column TweetDeck-style interface?

There is! It's called the "advanced web interface" and you can activate it any time you want. It lets you add many specialised columns, subscribe to hashtags and all kinds of stuff suited to large wide displays.

Log into the website, go to Preferences > Enable Advanced Web Interface, tick the box and click "Save Changes".

(To restore the default single column interface, do the same thing but untick the box instead.)

This used to be the default interface on Mastodon, and very old articles about the platform will have screenshots of the multicolumn interface.

@feditips Can I display multiple profiles on it? In the same way I can on Tweetdeck? I use work and personal accounts side by side.

No, but you can open other accounts in their own separate tabs on your browser.

@feditips Is there a user guide for the advanced web interface somewhere? I activated it, but struggle to adapt it.

Basically... it IS complicated! I never use it.

Some of the functionality comes from the settings buttons in the top right corners of columns. They let you pin columns open permanently, so you can extend the interface sideways. This is suited to wide monitors on desktop computers.

You also need to use the icons in the top left corner a lot more as the labelled links are hidden easily.

I just use the normal mode ? But a lot of people swear by the multicolumn mode so this is for them!

Search for a hashtag, then click on the slider icon in the top right corner of the column and select pin. You can then search for another hashtag and it will appear in another column. The slider icon lets you do all kinds of stuff in this mode.

It isn't on the website or the official app, but I think some third party apps offer this? FediLab and Tusky for Android offer this for example.

(There are also some website scripts out there which do this but I don't know how maintained or reliable they are.)

The best place to suggest things to Masto developers is on the github at:

      https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon

If you're not comfortable using github, message me and I'll try to help.

      @feditips I wish there were

      - a dedicated column for "subscribed to" #hashtags; clicking on a tag shows tagged toots in toot column

      - a dedicated column for #lists; clicking on a list name shows toots of list members in the toot column

While I absolutely enjoy the local and federated #timelines, they're not my main "home" on #Mastodon. I need way more #focus than these can offer.

Not that I know of. Bear in mind this is a very old interface that most people don't use. I don't know how much development it still gets.

If you're comfortable with the platform, I would submit suggestions as issues to the github if you can, to show that there is interest in development?

@feditips Is there (going to be) a way to also move the "Getting Started" column around? I'd love to have it on the left rather than on the far right. I use multiple columns, so for example, when I click on someone's profile in one of my first columns, it'll open in the "Getting Started" column all the way on the right. This leads to lots of horizontal scrolling. (On Tweetdeck, I used to move less important columns to the right half of the layout.)
