such a shame, a beautiful drive. Wonder if this is just bad luck due to conditions or more competency crisis

@sickburnbro Happens all the time in the northern Rockies. The soil is very bad for building roads. It's like a fine gravel.

@gentoobro yeah. I would assume they would monitor conditions leading to this unless it was a sudden collapse though.

@VikingWays @gentoobro from what I've seen it actually broke open, then fell completely in a few hours, so not *that* fast.

But given how much is done to stop avalanches, I'm positive there are ways to monitor soil pack as well.

@sickburnbro @gentoobro Thousands of miles of road, there is no way people are able to monitor this in a remote area like Wyoming. Sure if it's gradual, but that looks like a quick collapse.

@VikingWays @sickburnbro @gentoobro There was a highway in Northern Arizona that collapsed like that 4 or 5 years ago.

@gentoobro @VikingWays well, my thought being that if the road hadn't fully collapsed by the time the media was there you can probably add another 4-8 hours on to it. So probably took half a day minimum since ordinary people knew it was bad news.

@sickburnbro @VikingWays "A few hours" is basically instantaneous in a lot of areas out there. It might take over an hour to simply get the closest cop to drive out and block off the road, much less an engineer, much less a road crew equipped to actually do anything about it.
