@kirby
Gentoo sounds complicated

@Jojothegoodperson it's not really it's basically arch except you have a lot more customization options with your packages

I like OpenBSD but i'm not sure if the performance hit is worth it, and freebsd has really bad wifi card drivers

@Jojothegoodperson I'm not sure actually I haven't used Gentoo to game, I'm sure it'd be pretty easy [gentoo has steam in repos] and make.conf lets you specify video card so driver installation is handled for you when you update @world, so in theory, it should be pretty straightforward
but not so sure

Oh that sounds interesting, is it easy to play games on there and stuff?

Linux is like windows but the terminal is your best friend and you have to fix your own problems

People are still distrohopping? When are you going distro settle down bro? Find a cute waifu distro, put a ring on her finger and make little penguin babies.

@kirby I've used FreeBSD and haven't found it significantly slower than Devuan. Take that for what you will.
I will mention I haven't really used it for much yet, but for VMs and browser it's not bad at all.

I think the people that find success with FreeBSD are those that use it like gentoo and they use pourdiere for ports management. (sorry I'm not a frog so I don't care if I spelled that wrong).

The thing is, I tried building the mixxx port and it failed. Now I know how to compile mixxx from source on Ubuntu/Debian, but on FreeBSD I'm lost, I lack the experience and know-how to fix a port or compile from scratch with their build system.

@gnarley_boot @kirby Yeah this is common. The main issue I've found is the maintainers just up and decide one day "fuck it yolo" and no one ever bothers to take it up. Not that I envy that task. I've tried to fix programs that should simply compile from the source folder provided by FreeBSD and they simply will not due in large part to cruft. A VM BIOS (that I am forgetting off the top of my head now) won't install for me because I don't have GCC (3 I think). Installing a newer version fails because basically everything from the ancient GCCs has been depreciated.
Guess what? Stealing from anywhere else is not possible. It doesn't exist except in the source folder. So I cannot run some VMs now because of it. Extremely frustrating. The ancient GCC won't install because yet another ancient program is no longer being maintained and I can't find an alternative for it. Extremely frustrating.
Of course the maintainers for this specific package ARE still updating it from time to time. But catching that time is increasingly difficult as my version of FBSD gets older and older. I am considering a complete reinstall as a result, which would be so much of a pain in my ass I don't even want to get into it I'd start sweating.

@gnarley_boot @kirby I use pkg and there's really no more problems then you'd have with apt. Although it's frustratingly difficult for me to catch pkg right before an upgrade, so packages can be left in limbo for months until the next FBSD upgrade is ready and stable enough for an install. For the record, this is mostly because it breaks programs for no freaking reason, forcing me to install from source, which after a pkg install is like having your nuts in an ever tighter vice.
That said you really should install from source anyway so...🤷
Package management is a pain in the ass though if you like GUI package maintenance programs like synaptic. FreeBSD from what I found really has nothing that compares.

Honestly it's overkill, especially when you want to be productive and get work done. During the coof we had more freetime, but time is more precious these days.

I techpost on here and my alt all the time. Politics and anime tiddies have their place but you gotta spice it up every once in a while.
