Not that I envy that task. I've tried to fix programs that should simply compile from the source folder provided by FreeBSD and they simply will not due in large part to cruft. A VM BIOS (that I am forgetting off the top of my head now) won't install for me because I don't have GCC (3 I think). Installing a newer version fails because basically everything from the ancient GCCs has been depreciated.
Guess what? Stealing from anywhere else is not possible. It doesn't exist except in the source folder. So I cannot run some VMs now because of it. Extremely frustrating. The ancient GCC won't install because yet another ancient program is no longer being maintained and I can't find an alternative for it. Extremely frustrating.
Of course the maintainers for this specific package ARE still updating it from time to time. But catching that time is increasingly difficult as my version of FBSD gets older and older. I am considering a complete reinstall as a result, which would be so much of a pain in my ass I don't even want to get into it I'd start sweating.
