realization: since a USB 3 device can work with two high-speed diffpairs, power, and ground, you could define an embedding of USB 3 over SFP and make your thumbdrive 1000% cooler

rf (rf@mas.to)'s status on Thursday, 06-Jun-2024 00:29:00 JST rf @whitequark @0x47df Could you use your drive over a 10km data cable? For when you don't have space on your desk naturally. Maybe you'd need to relax some timing stuff from the spec

But the bare-minimum version is literally just two data lines directly into SFP+, with 50 Ω resistors to bypass receiver detection.
And you can sell this circuit board with barely any electronics for $200 as a corporate conference room solution! Don't ask how I knew (I couldn't believe I've spent $200 just to reverse-engineer 1-bit of information). The picture is my own implementation.Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -

You can find old Huawei SFP+ from decommissioned ISP servers at Shenzhen flea markets for a few bucks each. I got 10 for $20, truly unbelievable.
