@shrimp but they were not used by Canaanite peoples, they referred to philistines or sea peoples. And it is actually relevant today because people say Jews aren't indigenous to Palestine or that Palestinians are the Canaanites and Jews are the invading Israelites when thats not true.
@sun@shrimp you know what drives me nuts though? They never taught us in Catholic school that the Philistines were ~ Palestinians. They did a bad job at connecting biblical history and cultures to the modern world. It wasn't even on their minds. They just wanted us to consume the Catholic Bible word for word
@georgia I haven't seen making those claims about history. I've only seen people say modern day zionists are invading and colonizing the area which is objectively true.
@shrimp name a single Palestinian clan that doesn't trace their origins from outside Palestine at some point (excluding the one clan I know of with indigenous Jewish origin, their name means winemaker in arabic). by comparison Jews are indigenous. Call Zionists colonists all you want, it'll never change that.
@sun@shrimp literally every Jewish subgroup has matrilineal DNA from converts. the only difference is in mizrahi Jews its from Arabs and Persians and Berbers and in Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews its Southern European. That doesn't change that all these three Jewish groups have a common levantine paternal heritage similar to Druze and Lebanese (Phoenicians).
@georgia As I just said, it's irrelevant to what's happening now. Having some genetic heritage dating back thousands of years does not entitle you to go immigrate and kick out the current inhabitants, and that's ignoring that ashkenazis are almost entirely european.
I'm not entitled to go back to Scottland and kick out whoever happens to be living there now and I have a MUCH stronger historic and genetic claim to scottland than modern Israelis have to Israel.
@shrimp Ahskenazis are not almost entirely European, thats a myth. They are patrilineally largely levantine matrilineally southern European. being half indigenous is still indigenous. and if you were kicking out people from Scotland who were mostly 7th century conquerors and later (again, name an indigenous Palestinian clan) I'd argue you would have at least as much of a right to the land as them.
@shrimp and do you have a religion and culture rooted in ancient Scotland? I really dont think so. You'll never understand the feeling observant Jews have in their ancient homeland, knowing their ancestors walked the same land of prophets and warrior prophets. Islam stole the Jewish peoples religion and the Jewish peoples land, but again, you'd never understand what that feels like.
@shrimp@georgia if it was just about moving there it would be one thing but effectively when you move there you're asserting being gone over a thousand years gets you a pass back in and you buttress a government actively kicks out people that were living there for the last 800
@sun@shrimp I dont support kicking anyone out of their homes, I just object to it being called a colonizing movement because Jews are indigenous and Arabs were themselves colonizers.
@georgia@shrimp ok well I don't think its a colonizing movement because the people are jews and not entitled, I think it's a colonizing movement because it is one.
@shrimp there's nothing worse than what happened in the post Bar Kochba revolt genocide going on, but either way I agree with you. I dont support crimes against the innocent and I think the settlements are harmful to peace and illegal.
@georgia Neither will you since it happened centuries before you were born. But again, it's entirely irrelevant. Some ancient wrong visited upon your ancestors generations ago does not entitle you to do the same (or worse) to innocent people in the present day
@sun@georgia@shrimp my feelings on the middle east situation is that my tax dollars should have been paying for my healthcare and it starts and ends there
@georgia@sun@shrimp jews arent indigenous, there are some jews that are. palestinians are around 20% arab, also part turk, as is the case for samaritan jews, mizrahi jews are part turk or armenian or iranian, yemini jews are part arab
