I think I’d be a better songwriter if I listened to more bad music

all of my best creative work emerges because I’m frustrated by something but most of the time I listen to music and am like “this is great”so why would I need to make anything

maybe I'm just too safe with my music listening habits in general 🤔 I'd love to carve out more intentional listening time somehow in my already very busy life.

@detondev true yeah, it’s specifically “wasted potential” that seemd to provoke the most frustration…. going to local shows tends to be a good avenue for that lol

@laslojott @clarity I hope this is helping, I am up late and feel like I'm thinking like it :)

@laslojott @clarity You can always learn from and try to fix art you dislike, but with something that's like 99% there for you, it both makes the missing 1% eat at the back of your mind, and gives you a powerful and resonant foundation to start with. Art is like people, I love what is there even though it will never be perfect 🖤💙👁💙🖤

@laslojott @clarity In hopes of saying what I said before with more...clarity, I actually think that everything I love is quite good, but in most cases, like with my current favorite album Census Designated, part of that love stems from nitpicking it's "off" bits and missed opportunities (with regards to lyrical ambiguity and some moments), alongside everything about it that has me connecting to it so hard. (its by a trans woman near my age, the gender relation themes, THE PRODUCTION, etc)

@clarity @detondev wait, is that how that works? I need to stop listening to good music then…

@detondev the former usually isn’t it for me, it’s stuff like “I wish D&D was the game people actually thought it was” or “surely programming doesn’t have to be this tedious” or “I really want to like tactics games but they never land for me” or “I hate how my composer peers and teachers in music school treat musicians like inconvenient obstacles between their work and their audience”

@clarity Tho when you say that, do you really mean "wasted potential"? For example, I feel that Below The Root is a gem of a game grossly chained to a rock by the C64's limitations. However, Captain Blood's hardware limitations actually added SO MUCH to it (that's a thing that can happen!), so it's ultimately the creator's misfires that hold it back.
It's "I wish these scrappy creators had the resources to fully realize their vision" VS "They're straight-up wasting what they have to offer"
