     by law a previous employer can only confirm employment. there is a whole cottage industry of employment verification services to avoid some idiot boss saying anything other than yes or no. check out something called The Work Number for more on this incredibly depressing topic.

I get a contract for a new job, it always says 3 months notice, I quit at the current employer, I hand in a request for a shortening of the notice period, we sign, I contact my new employer to set the beginning to the new possible asap date. It's a whole spiel.
