Why did Disney lose a billion dollars on their Star Wars hotel?
Because it was a shakedown. They thought they could put all the expensive items they had developed in the R&D phase of Star Wars land behind a $3000 a day paywall and drain every penny out of the most fanatical paypigs, rather than integrate it into the main park and endure the torment of lower profit margins.
The paypigs balked and Disney got fucked.

@judgedread Bears make money. Bulls make money.

@judgedread @TrevorGoodchild disney also has all inclusive packages at their parks too, and there are tons of those disney fanatics that even spent an exhaustive amount of time about talking about which are the best.

@TrevorGoodchild There are many reviews of Galactic Starcruiser by the PERFECT DISNEY CUSTOMERS - absolutely credulous apolitical upper middle class kidults and dads - expressing their misery and frustration with the nickel and diming to get a barely acceptable experience. Disney runs cruise ships, they should know that an all inclusive package sits better with the premium service customer than Blockbuster late fees.
A travel agent could have told them that, if any still remain.

@judgedread I wonder if it's because the economy is so bad. The nickle and diming is always a worse experience, but one people will tolerate when they are trying to economize.

@sickburnbro The trouble there is it's too calculated. Even the paypiggies are getting sick of Disney's Apple style strategic crippling of products to force you into the highest price tier.

@judgedread man, you used to get your hand slapped if you got anywhere near the minifridge. Nowadays it seems like most of them are empty.

@sickburnbro It's complicated. There's basic things like 'Standard vs. Deluxe' packages. Then there's 'Oh, you drank a soda from the hotel minifridge, that will be $27.'

@judgedread @sickburnbro The ideal holiday is one where you pay the price upfront and don't have to worry about money for the things you do while vacationing.
That's what Walt Disney also did with the theme parks in the first place.
You pay at the entrance instead of at every attraction like at a country fair.
But they had more greed than sense, obviously.

@VikingWays @judgedread At some point when the economy wasn't bad the minifridge was a "convenience" - the 'better' version of going to the soda machine down by the office, so it was just like 2x as much. I think it was probably mostly done because people on business trips could comp it.
But as things have gotten squeezed, it became predatory.

@sickburnbro @judgedread How fucked is our system? They purposely put 'bait' out in hotels and charge hospital prices if you so much as dare drink or eat it. I've never once eaten a damn thing out of a hotel or even made coffee in it, the entire experience sours me and pisses me off knowing it's some weird 'gotcha'.
