I have a theory about why every social media post about either cyclist or biker safety immediately gets swamped by really angry car drivers who want to kill us, and it comes down to ignorance. Most cyclists and bikers are also car drivers, so we can see both points of view. Most car drivers are only car drivers, which makes it harder to understand the different points of view. Learning to drive a car should include some time on 2 wheels. #BikeTooter#motorcycle#CarBrain#roadsafety
@CloudyMrs all true. And once car drivers have say 10 years experience of driving a car, they should be obliged to sit a test for driving a heavy vehicle like a truck or a coach. It completely changes your perspective of the road.
@peterbrown I agree. I also have an HGV licence. All forms of transport need slightly different skills. I always appreciated folk who understood turning circles and stopping distances when driving something big. Knowing how other folk see things, really helps.
@CloudyMrs 💯agree. It’s the Jeremy Clarkson/Daily Heil approach that presents a binary “them and us” narrative which is complete BS, but makes for clickbaity headlines. Learning to ride a motorbike in my 40’s made me a better driver; learning to ride a bicycle as a kid made me a better pedestrian. We all need to do a few miles in each others shoes to get along better.
@CloudyMrs EVERY driving school, especally for heavy haul and professional drivers, should have at least one safety training hour for an experience like this:
@steeperthandeep to do that would need investment. Investors, including governments, just don't see where the return would be, so all we get is tinkering around the edges. The recent adverts advising motor drivers to leave a decent passing distance with cyclists just seems to have created outrage. Lots of keyboard warriors seem pretty comfortable with the idea of killing other humans because they once saw a bike go through a red light or a bike once gave them a scare on a shared use path.
@CloudyMrs Road rules are meant to keep us all safe. Unfortunately, many vehicle operators (including cyclists and drivers) disregard vital regulations. This creates a dangerous environment for everyone. It’s time for us to come together and call for more regular updates and awareness of road safety guidelines. Everyone deserves a safe and secure journey, whether we’re on two wheels or four. Let’s work towards a future where we’re all road-ready, not road-reckless!
@CloudyMrs I live on the central coast of California; relatively low key traffic wise yet there are many many cyclists who flout the rules. I can understand how this enrages motorists who confront this kind of behavior constantly.
@CloudyMrs Perhaps motorists feel they have priority, whether the rules give it to them or not. What I see is near chaos on the roadways. Do you have examples from your area where “rules” to favor cars?
