     @crmsnbleyd@emacs.ch @pinkforest@hachyderm.io Novell remain silent on the copyright status of early BSD / Research Unix code that are found everywhere online, they never confirmed or denied the validity of the former SCO license so far. Their lawyers are probably too afraid to make any statement on Unix at this point.

     @pinkforest@hachyderm.io Historical Unix code copyright status is still an unsolved problem, even today. Many sources claim it's BSD but that license was given by SCO so it's questionable at best. Historical Unix code is practically free only because its copyright is so messy that we don't even know who still legally has the right to enforce it.

     @niconiconi @crmsnbleyd @pinkforest A quick grep on https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate makes some Novell copyright notices show up (HAL, Kerberos, …) so at least for illumos I'd be surprised if it wouldn't be clear.
     
     In fact kind of fun to see SGI, Sun, Novell, … in a single notice: https://github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/blob/master/usr/src/lib/libdwarf/common/dwarf_elf_access.c
     
     And an interesting one is seeing a lot of files with just Sun followed by AT&T, makes me wonder if Sun passed a deal with AT&T directly. At least I'm not seeing any Santa Cruz / SCO copyright notices, just things like documentation and USB/PCI IDs.

     @niconiconi @crmsnbleyd @pinkforest Also a thing I'd wonder is who the heck holds Unix Copyright these days as in the meantime Novell got acquired/merged/… a bunch of times.
     
     At least OpenText (one of the ~successors) seems aware of Unix given they're in the platinum (highest) members of The Open Group (which AFAIK only deals with the UNIX® Trademark and nothing related to Unix copyright).
