@mitchconner If I had a tiny house, I'd do 12v LED for lighting, probably a parabolic skylight for maximum comfy and cost, and a rocket mass heater with the foundation serving as a thermal mass. Wiring would be cheap because it's a small homr, and you could go solar easily when using 12v. Ductless mini split would be the way to go to keep HVAC simple and not waste space. Plumbing would be a matter of joining the bathroom wall with the kitchen and dumping the sink water into the the same septic. You'd be surprised how little water you have to use if you're trying to conserve it. I'd likely do a shallow well and septic with pumps for both if I could get the land in a good place like southern WV or East TN.

@BowsacNoodle It's not that prefabs are that expensive. You can have really nice ones for like $100k. The issue is finding somewhere with land that is zoned for it. Then, that's without the city changing its zoning to kick you out (like Mississippi did).

@givenup Shipping containers can only work as a "house" if you either put them in a cave or barn or treat the container as glorified siding (because it is). They got hot AF in the summer and cold in the winter, there's no lateral strength at all (do not bury them unless you want to die from a cavein), they will rust from condensation due to structural steel and poor insulation properties preventing a reasonably consistent temperature.

I put an offer in on a place with a beautiful new barn. I mean gorgeous. On a dead end road in the middle of nowhere. House had a foundation and a little building started. Maybe 3 acres. Glad that didn't pan out.

You're gonna want a 48v system if running HVAC off batteries btw. They yank like 10-20 amps at 240v at max load.

@tyler @mitchconner Good call. I haven't looked that seriously into solar, but I know 12V is easy and incredibly versatile. Ideally I'd want to be wired in to the actual grid for power at least, especially if I'm running a mini split.

@d0c40r0 @BowsacNoodle @mjdigspigs all that grass out the front door of the camper, i've been told i can have my garden in there, i also bought a 20x10 foot run like the one i got out back here, except it has a peak roof instead of a flat on top, cuz my biggest issue always was rain gathering on my tarp.

@givenup @d0c40r0 @mjdigspigs I love steel toe boots so much. I use them stupidly sometimes to prop things up, like if I'm putting stairs on a deck and they need a few more inches of height to get in at the right angle.
