Biden administration to increase tariffs on Chinese electric cars to 100 percent

The Biden administration will announce new tariffs on electric vehicle and solar cell imports from China, two major components of the administration's efforts to reduce U.S. emissions, officials confirmed to reporters. Officials on the call said tariffs will... #press

      #China #US #TradePolicy

I agree, in principle, but since the principle "change through trade" has not worked out regarding China--at least since President #Xi has been at the helm--and the start of the #EnergyWars, #NationalSecurity aspects should, as in China, have predominance. As #Elmo's #Tesla has shown, modern #EV|s are also 3D surveillance vehicles.
If there is a #NationalSecurity (not #DataPrivacy) for #TikTok to be made, a very rate bipartisan law, def. 4 EVs, 2

@thehill Not in any way defending China here, but just pointing out the hypocricy of US ”free trade” rhetoric.

US free trade is free only as long as US companies benefit off it. Freedom flies out the door immediately when it’s companies are outcompeted.

What exactly do you mean by "with #datahygiene as the clause for being able to do business."...#DataHygiene?

@HistoPol @thehill Fair point. And I would go so far as to say tha change through trade never was a flawed idea from the start. Europe tried it with Russia, look where it go us.

However, should the US really want maximum competition & maximum innovation, they could legislate themselves out of the surveillance aspects of the problem with #datahygiene as the clause for being able to do business.

I'm not against it, don't get me wrong.

I'm a student of narratives. Two-face calls me to call it.

@HistoPol @thehill Data hygiene means treatmeant of data in a controlled way.

I live in #Finland. Here we have one of the most advanced data hygiene legislations in the world.

Companies can be sanctioned or stopped from doing business if they are handling customer data insecurely.

Data hygiene regulations are enforced actively by the state. Companies that handle sensitive customer data have to prove they will do so before they are granted permission to operate.

      Thank you.

How about #US #BigTech in Finland? They just don't set up shop there?

      @gimulnautti

Hm, US #BigTech not breaking data privacy,...IDK.

#Zuckerberg is known for (too) "freely" colaborating with state agencies, for one thing, for another, there was the #CambridgeAnalytica scandal which led to the (IMO) insane #ProjectAnalyticaSummit. Even after passing the dark-red light of the scandal, not much had changed:

      https://mastodon.social/@HistoPol/110536828149575634

It is widely known, IMO, that #Meta is even selling customer data as part of its business model.

@HistoPol @thehill There’s no history of US big tech being sued for breaking data hygiene laws yet

We don’t mandate processing all customer data inside our borders. US could do that though and make data hygiene compliance the cost of doing business

There’s been talks of mandating this in #EU. Not happened yet

What did happen was the #US state investing in strong #lobbying campaigns against it in Brussels

US state certainly throws it’s weight behind it’s companies
