you hire h1bs at prevailing wages for a professional they're not just contractors. I don't know how that's enforced though

@sun @shibao the scam is that you come up with excuses not to hire the locals and then whine that you need foreigners. then you pay the foreigners less, or you can treat them worse due to the yoke of deportation

@sun @shibao you can lowball them and be more likely to get them to accept and gradually bring wages down. Also, since their ability to stay in the country is tied to employment h1bs are more likely to put up with bullshit so you can squeeze them harder. I know Intel loved h1bs for putting up with horrible lab shift hours and such.

Hearing Java out in the wild is weird to me. I haven't done Java in nearly a decade (beyond some little things) and, when I last worked with it, it was getting upserted by Kotlin for mobile development (and C# for everything else).

I realize it's still huge but I literally never hear about it anymore :<

@sun @shibao Over in Aus some businesses got caught hiring foreign professionals at below minimum wage for several years. Not "below industry standard wage", below Australian minimum wage. They got fined like AU$50k when they probably saved well over 10x that if you assume they got even a fraction of the work quality.

There are some very desperate people in the world that are more than happy to not report their employers letting them stay in the country, I think it's incredibly naive to believe that H1Bs etc. aren't driving down wages.

@sun@shitposter.world @shibao@misskey.bubbletea.dev you hire h1b not for cheap labor, but because they will take more abuse from you because they can't quit without leaving the country.
