When someone lays the old "Why are you proud of being white? Your ancestors actions aren't yours." on you.
The answer is...
"I am proud of the work of my ancestors. The things they invented. The nations they created, which culminated in me.
By your logic, I shouldn't be proud of my son or daughter because their actions are not my own.
This is just a natural thing, it's a pity you've destroyed part of your own humanity just in order to not be called racist."

You do have a religion. You worship the god of academic certification.
Your priests are men who present themselves as scientists, men like Bill Nye.

Not really. Bill Nye is mostly a clown for the TV audience. Most certification is bogus. Certification can help differentiate a charlatan from a serious person when it comes to some topics but is not a god.

@thefinn @Dagnar Clearly I do.
> It's tied into why people require religion,
and if you deprive them of it - they start making their own.
Ah yes, the 'well you believe in the god of the vector calculus or whatever'. Because it's easier for you to understand what being secular is like, when you can use your own framework of understanding to model it.
But no, I don't have a religion.
> It's a necessary part of human existence.
Sure, having ancestors is necessary. Having children is less so.
> At that point you're nothing but an animal.
Clearly more than just an animal, since I'm willing to reject your ideas, and put a line in the ground saying that you do not get to define what I am. Name another animal that can write the previous sentence.

@jeffcliff @Dagnar Clearly not, if you think parents shouldn't be proud of their kids, or people shouldn't be proud of their ancestors.
Those things are very, very human. It's tied into why people require religion, and if you deprive them of it - they start making their own.
It's a necessary part of human existence. To disagree with it is quite literally an inhuman position.
At that point you're nothing but an animal.
Anyhow, gonna try sleeping (again).

The problem with you modernists is you detach yourselves from the long chain of human existence. You have nothing to be proud of except your own insular bubble of experience, which ends up being dictated by corporate interests. Your entire life is therefore meaningless in the history of humanity because you have become nothing more than a marketing unit. Your pod awaits, along with the bug paste.

@Dagnar @jeffcliff They are like rats in cages being proud of how many times they could turn their running wheel around that day.
It's not a human existence.

You're right, you shouldn't.
> This is just a natural thing
Yeah, taking credit for others work is a natural thing. But it's still wrong.
