I recently asked a friend with an EV if range anxiety is still an issue. His response is that solvency anxiety is a bigger issue. He raised Fisker and Lucid as two examples of companies that might expire before your car does.

    Tesla now gives similar vibes.

@carnage4life Tesla also has unparalleled capacity to enshitify your car and squeeze you for extra cashflow. Which you are in a really poor position to do anything about because cars are expensive and once people know how the ownership and cost model has changed you have a hard time selling it.

The issue with Tesla is less that the company runs out of money but instead the ownership experience degrades far worse than you signed up for. Concrete examples that owners are already experiencing are resale values, repair costs and insurance prices being worse than expected.

The company disinvesting in its charging network and new cars is a sign things will get worse not better.

@carnage4life I think build quality is really starting to suffer as well. Was behind a new Model Y yesterday (still had paper plates) - the hatch was visibly not centered in the opening and the “Dual Motor” badge was a good several degrees off level. Obviously crooked. I’d have never accepted delivery of that.

@andy @carnage4life They made it impossible for the vast majority of mechanics to get certified or obtain the tools to fix the car so how many thousands of people now own a very heavy paper weight?

In every industry, when a company decides that its previously main line of business is done, and that something else is “The Future™️,” customers of its old business are headed for ongoing degradation of products and services.

Elon Musk is clearly bored of cars and facing severe headwinds. So he declares that Tesla isn’t a car company.

What can Tesla’s automotive customers expect except pain and suffering?

@zachnfine It's amazing that we're at a place where people have to research if the car can be jailbroken before considering purchase.

@carnage4life I remember before I bought my model 3 (in 2018) wondering about this same issue. I scoured the net and found posts by people who'd analyzed communications between the car and the mothership and were convincing that it was all not too complicated and both mapping and car network functions could likely be hacked into place with some python scripts on a rented server. Seemed reasonable enough.

There are enough of the cars out there that there'll be 3rd party repairs and parts.

@TimWardCam That's true, but the manufacturer going bust sure doesn't help the situation. 😅

@carnage4life Car manufacturers can stop supporting cars without going bust. There's bits for my VW which have been unobtainable for many years now and the car is only 20 years old.

@carnage4life yeah, I’m glad I switched to a Hyundai. Boring but the company will be here in ten years
