It really fucking annoys me when people don't follow the conversation and just start arguing against points that nobody was making because they just feel like arguing.
You're not my fucking wife or gf.

this is called “gainsaying” and it’s one of the main traits of the feminist

Reminds me of practically every argument I ever had with a girlfriend.

today is our second anniversary.
we have literally never had an argument. Zero.
it’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever experienced.

we disagree a lot, but we are always able to work toward a synthesis and we never do it in front of others.
honestly, we learn from each other constantly.

son of a bitch, she had them reduced when she was about 45. I will never have the pleasure of bouncing those firm E cups.

they’re not more reserved in private, just express themselves differently
it’s been really amazing to get a deep dive into Chinese people
sometimes they forget I’m there and really relax

@s2208 @zeke Yeah there's nothing wrong with disagreement, but you hear people screaming at each other from houses and apartments and wonder why the fuck they are even together.

@thefinn @s2208 @zeke Is it the case that Asians in general being more reserved, the women are less emotional and more rational about things?

it has to be an impossible task for them - crossing to a completely alien culture and language and still thriving
I’ve been listening to Chinese nonstop for two years and I’ve only picked up about ten words.

@s2208 @zeke @thefinn See that is interesting. Something to be said for putting yourself outside of ones comfort zone.

They are taught English beginning in grade school. Their accents tend to be pretty fucked up (unintelligible at times), but most of them can read English and understand it well enough when they hear it. At least, that was my experience in Korea.

@thefinn @machciv @s2208 @zeke @DC5FAN Young people I used to teach would get so frustrated with the stupid gate keeping courses they had to do to wash out people and reduce the class size. Such a waste.
But why have gate keeping courses when they can just let only the people capable of doing the work into the program in the first place?
Because standards have been so lowered and are so scatter shot now, especially with the flood of foreign educated students, that you can't trust they really received the education they claim to.
I had a guy with a Masters of Engineering from one of our middle tier universities apply to a job and the thesis work was basically what a final project at one of our three year technical colleges, straight out of high school, would be 20 years ago. Another had a "master of data science", whatever the fuck that is, from a 10 month insta-diploma program from a top university here. His background before that was business and restaurant management. But he got in and they graduated him with some coding project.
Total shit show.

@petra @thefinn @machciv @s2208 @zeke @DC5FAN >"master of data science"
Guessing that was just learning about how to use the Pivot Table function in Excel.
This is one of those things where if an accountant is smart enough, they can figure that out on their own, but someone got the bright idea to teach it to people too dumb to be accountants.

@EvilSandmich @thefinn @machciv @s2208 @zeke @DC5FAN Python and the usual ML libraries you can learn on your own, but pretty much yeah.
I think it was about $40,000 for the 10 month program. This is maybe 4 years ago. It was full and people we clamouring to get into it. So they added adjacent programs. It was all just money printing on the part of the university.

foreign students pay full freight up front in cash. it’s basically a way to buy their way into the country.

@s2208 @zeke @DC5FAN Holy shit 12 is the opt-out age?

@thefinn @s2208 @zeke @DC5FAN I agree with that completely. Some kind of primary school for basic reading, writing, arithmetic. Beyond that? A third of the population are ditch diggers, most tradesmen or clerks, and a tiny fraction technicals or engineers.

@machciv @s2208 @zeke @DC5FAN Naaa, I'd just change the things they learn later. I understand the sentiment. Who the fuck needs to know Algebra 2 apart from mathematicians?
I'd teach people things like financial accounting, how to start a business, what paperwork to fill out, what is required to keep it running, etc.
Get people prepared to DO THINGS. Right now all we do is teach them to be "Good dogs"
