Watching YouTubers like moistcritikal talk about the TikTok ban without pointing out WHY it’s at risk of getting banned now of all times. :pepe_thounking: it’s absolutely getting targeted now because it’s being used to promote politics & evidence America does not want the people circulating. The U.S. wasn’t this vigilant against TikTok when China was harvesting data from its users, but now, it’s because tons of people using TikTok aren’t tolerating a certain conflict happening across the pond that America has a vested interest in.

The difference between Gab/fedi and TikTok is every normie is using the latter. How are you going to sell a normie on fedi?
Also; it's an election year. This is the big issue. Of course if they "ban" it, they run into the problem that zoomers will be mad so the idea is to force them to sell it to someone in the USA so they can control things. -

Pleroma-tan (kirby@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Apr-2024 13:18:42 JST Pleroma-tan @Herman_Hetherington @RehnSturm256 they could just find and exploit vulnerabilities in common fediverse software [which by the way there are very few of and there are even less MAINSTREAM softwares] like pleroma, mastodon, misskey. Gab is gab so youre right i suppose
fair enough for the second paragraph -

Herman_Hetherington (herman_hetherington@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 25-Apr-2024 13:18:43 JST Herman_Hetherington @kirby @RehnSturm256 The supposed reason was external hostile govt interference (China). Gab is American owned and fedi is distributed so who or what do you attack? the activitypub standard or dozens of tiny foreign instances with almost no users?
In any case this wasn't about banning tiktok it's about commandeering it. The idea was to force bytedance to divest so that a US/ Israel friendly entity could enforce speech restrictions & narrative control. If that doesn't ultimately happen it will be replaced by a drop in controlled copy to fill the void. -

Pleroma-tan (kirby@lab.nyanide.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Apr-2024 13:52:54 JST Pleroma-tan @Herman_Hetherington @RehnSturm256 okay there is a lot of fediverse software, but very few have caught a lot of attention, and the nsa is probably particularly good at finding vulns in software, so im sure they would manage to find a few in all the mainstream ones [aka all 3 of them] -

There are lots even if we don't include the various *oma *key forks (wordpress is activitypub compatible for example). They just happen to ALL be vulnerable.
