German police prevent Irish people from speaking and singing in Irish in Germany.

But hey, at least we still have the Single Market™, amirite?

    EU, you’re doing amazing, sweetie!

Which EU institution is in charge of supervising policing in EU members states?

@freakazoid @TCatInReality It’s literally the same argument they make for wanting to ban end-to-end encryption.

@TCatInReality "You're only allowed to speak if the cops can understand what you're saying" sounds super reasonable to me.

That escalated quickly. From one protest in Germany being broken up to an EU-wode comment.

In the article, it's clear that languages can be used at protests, if there is an interpreter ...to ensure there's no incitement to terrorism. IMO, that's a worthy goal - and a reasonable limitation.

This group knew the law, chose not to have an interpreter (altho it seems it had many polyglots) and got the inevitable result. To me, it seems like they were aiming for a headline.

      Literally the same?

Sure, they're both about intel gathering. But one is a restriction on private communications. The other is a restriction on public, group protest events.

Reasonable people can disagree whether diff rules should apply.

For example, write "FIRE!" on a piece of paper and mail it to a neighbor. The response will be very diff from shouting it in a crowd.

@TCatInReality @freakazoid Yeah, so, I’m on the police shouldn’t be able to stop you speaking your language side of this debate. And, sure, let’s agree to disagree.

Assuming you think incitement to violence is not protected speech, I'm not sure why that's an issue.

If you think it is protected, then I'm outta here.

I'll answer to myself, since TCat doesn't know and rather wants to "move on" now, after I asked for chapter and verse of the law.

The rule in question seems to be the "Berlin Freedom of Assembly Act" (approx 2020) which, interesting enough, further constrains the right of assembly as guaranteed by the Grundgesetz. I stll have my doubts if a federal country can do that. But I'd like to point out that the GG Article 8 only guarantees the right of assembly to all _Germans_.

So assemblies by non-Germans are just permitted on sufferance ... which gives the police a lot of leeway do everything they want with assemblies by expatriates, fugitives, immigrants. Exactly the groups where you would anyway expect 100% neutral objectivity by German police.
