@sun got to "Do you praise drawings they bring home from school that you actually think are terrible?" and stopped. absolute :niggaredditor: frame of mind
@sun@shitposter.world Makes you wonder if them calling the public "paranoid" for being concerned about things is also considered under the "pro-social lies" bin?
@gabriel at least the article doesn't explicitly suggest that larger prosocial lies are justified but placing the primacy on empathy and prosociality over truth kind of implicitly suggests that.
something that is not addressed in the article is, what if as a general social rule you should be against all lying but as an individual you can make calls for when it's better. it's possible that splitting hairs on lying causes antisocial lying to increase
@hyolo I go to significant lengths to avoid saying untrue things in interpersonal context. I can't remember the last time I said a white lie. I navigate this by being empathetic and saying true things.
One example the article gave was a kid with giving you their art. I would say "I love that you made this and we're going to put it on the fridge."
I would tell a lie to prevent an innocent person from being punished but that isn't prosocial exactly. I still wouldn't like it but I would evaluate the damage of each outcome and make a choice.
It really doesn't matter to me if prosocial lying demonstrates empathy, I think that lying comes with risk.
As a side note I can't really rectify that with trolling on the Fediverse except that it's not interpersonal and it isn't about something important. But it's still got the problems I mentioned. Maybe one day I will grow out of it.
