Google went from “don’t be evil” to “help commit genocide or you’re fired”.

Zach Klipp (he/him) 🥥🌻🇵🇸 (zachklipp@androiddev.social)'s status on Friday, 19-Apr-2024 00:43:12 JST Zach Klipp (he/him) 🥥🌻🇵🇸 Wow I just read the email, and the tone is more like “you’re gonna genocide and you’re gonna like it bitch”. The irony of linking to the anti-discrimination and harassment policies is the most “saying the quiet part out loud” reminder that those policies, and all of HR, only exist to protect the company, not the workers.

carl marks (tillshadeisgone@blackqueer.life)'s status on Friday, 19-Apr-2024 18:44:52 JST carl marks @richard_merren I doubt my saying this is going to make a difference but none of what you're saying reflects the fact that the company is aiding and abetting a genocide. You're literally complaining about them disrupting an office but ignoring the genocide. In what twisted world is this small inconvenience worse than mass murder and displacement?
In short, what is wrong with you?

Richard (richard_merren@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 19-Apr-2024 18:44:53 JST Richard @zachklipp This protest group has been around for three years and nobody was fired until they disrupted the office and refused repeated offers to disperse with no consequences. I understand that you and others feel strongly about not wanting your company to do business with Israel (though it is not an opinion I share), but it is hard to fathom why someone would stay for years at a company they find morally objectionable, or assume they could keep their job after this type of office conduct.

Richard (richard_merren@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 20-Apr-2024 00:10:12 JST Richard @tillshadeisgone But I do not work for Googlr and have always chosen to work for ethical tech companies and avoided working for the FAANG companies for MANY ethical reasons despite lower salaries. if you really believe that Google is involved in genocide, then you should urge this OP to quit his job. If not, what is wrong with him? If you believe the company is this tainted, then criticize him for working there, not me who has nothing to do with any company involved in the things you despise.

carl marks (tillshadeisgone@blackqueer.life)'s status on Saturday, 20-Apr-2024 00:10:12 JST carl marks @richard_merren I'm not going to play word games and quibble about semantics with you here. I am criticizing you because you are criticizing the protestors, that is why I addressed you. You're also denying an extensively documented genocide and providing rhetorical cover for Google, a company that is providing direct support to the Israel Defense Ministry, which also has been well documented.
I take issue with that.
Anyway, I'm glad you have principles. They might be even more useful if you applied them a bit more broadly.

Richard (richard_merren@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 20-Apr-2024 00:10:13 JST Richard @tillshadeisgone To be clear, it was the people who run the office who complained about the disruption, not me. And they gave these protesters multiple chances to disperse without being arrested and the protesters refused because they preferred to make a big show. And without even arguing the offensive misuse of the word genocide here, this company is not accused of participation in genocide--this group has complained about the relationship with Israel since long before this war began.

Richard (richard_merren@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 20-Apr-2024 01:28:59 JST Richard @tillshadeisgone II guess you are trying to say that if this guy doesn't quit Google then he is supporting genocide? He gets a pass because he says the right stuff online even though he continues providing material support to and drawing a paycheck from the company you think is directly supporting genocide while I draw your condemnation because I dare to question whether the term "genocide" applies here even though I have no direct connection to this or any other genocidal acts. Princlples.

carl marks (tillshadeisgone@blackqueer.life)'s status on Saturday, 20-Apr-2024 01:28:59 JST carl marks @richard_merren in case you missed it, I am actually not saying anything about OP, whereas you seem to be very concerned about him. If you really think he should quit his job because of something you don't believe is happening, then I suggest you take that nonsense up with him. Leave me out of it.
I'm not interested in your bad faith arguments about what I should or shouldn't condemn because it's obvious you don't even have the ethics to admit that a genocide is happening. But like I said, me pointing that out to you isn't going to make a difference when you're happily ignoring extensive international documentation so I'll leave it there.

Fuck, and I cannot stress this enough, him and this company.
