Kid Creole and the Coconuts never broke the US, even though they were a Brooklyn band. All down to the fact radio stations and then MTV didnt know what genre they were - they werent Rock enough, not Funk enough, not R&B enough.. so they just didnt get played. But they were the coolest things most people in the UK and Europe had ever heard so broke through over here because most of us hadnt heard anything so cool before.

one of their biggest breaks was back when the UK only had 3 tv channels: BBC 1, 2 and ITV - with most bands only performing to recorded versions of themselves on Top of the Pops.

Then one night in 1982, ITV put on an hour of the Coconuts playing live on a purpose built set (with interview of Kid Creole and Coati Mundi segments inbetween).

Millions of british people sat down to have their tea over the telly and this came one, it was quite literally the coolest thing many had ever seen.

prior to the Coconuts, Creole and Mundi were part of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band with Creole's brother.

Then prior to that in '79 Kid Creole was writing songs as part of the disco group Machine which is where most people nowadays might know of his work due to his song "There But For the Grace of God Go I" turning up in the Netflix musical series The Get Down.

Their downfall as a band came slowly bit by bit from minor friction over their name.

Because they were in fact formed specifically as a trio Kid Creole (August Darnell), Coati Mundi (Andy Hernandez) and Adriana Kaegi. All who sang and would take center stage at points but they chose their name to call back to bands from the 30s. Which ended with promoters, radio jockeys, and journalists always assuming Kid Creole was the band.

There was something about KCatC that felt exotic to me, listening on the far coast of Canada to whatever I could find that was exciting and held the promise of getting out. I can't dance but they got me doing my best!

@X yes totally, they brought a lot of different sounds that you just didnt hear together with an energy and a style vision that ran counter to everything people thought was correct in terms of music at that time
