@am @wizard because of the upfront learning curve involved with learning nix, the current instability in what workflow they expect you to use (config? flakes? home-manager? nobody knows!), software that isn't packaged (in general this isn't a thing, but there will always be at least one or two programs where this is true, and at least for me likely no easy substitutes for them), and the time investment stemming from all these things (as someone who is relatively inexperienced with computers to begin with), nixos is just a very hard sell for me even if I very much get the appeal of it in theory

@am @wizard yes I would say so, I haven't seriously attempted programming in a very long time and nix as a declarative config language is definitely edging very close to that, I also don't have more than basic proficiency with shell and for sysadmin stuff in general I would firmly say I'm at most an intermediate skill level

@allison @wizard you're inexperienced?

@am @wizard that sounds like nearly ideal conditions for getting into it tbh, I definitely would want at least a couple of people to fall back on myself if I got into it (it may not strongly be implied in the posts, but nix has been tempting me for a while at this point)

@allison @wizard i'm willing to give it a fair shake and have two diff ppl think it'll go great and offer to help. i'm not averse to writing a pkg if i need it. mostly it's that arch instability absolutely has fucked with me before, fedora always has One Thing that drives me nuts and pop uses x11 but otherwise was smooth. i'm going for kde wayland vrr on amd, i think this could be a just works thing, but i need to, idk, see
