Oh what I meant is serverside, post-upload, pre-posting. Like, webm gets transcoded to mp4, and HEVC to H.264 for maximum compatibility. I do all my personal transcoding with ffmpeg.
@tyler@Tony@georgia@MCMLXVIIOTG@MadrePappagallo Yeah this one here is nice at $6 per month if purchased monthly and their service is fast. Might be easy enough to setup for automatic conversion by having videos go into a folder that automatically puts it to queue on this and then reassigns it a placeholder name in the new home which loads in as soon as the file is ready from their server.
There's other reasons not to do it this way (specifically because we use media proxy), you should start your own instance (to get familiar) and work on development though! If you're interested.
@tyler@Tony@georgia@MCMLXVIIOTG@MadrePappagallo I don't know why this wouldn't work with media proxy, but I don't know how media proxy works. This would obviously add a third party service to the mix which makes a huge data vulnerability, but if they're trustworthy that's cheaper than the price to rentor buy better hardware.
thats actually what I thought. I didn't join as a business though, but I was interested in making money. But then i found a community.
That being said, I get to talk to a lot of people here who have helped me learn and build software for my actual business which has saved me 1000s of dollars per year, so I think its a great place.
Currently im developing an email server/CRM program for my IRL business which has already saved me a ton of money.
I wouldn't have figured out how to do most of that without this place.
I first joined fedi as a business. Then realized that it really wouldn't work here.
Then I spent a year or so trying to be Mr. Very Serious (spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ), I wanted to develop some Bible software (I did, at api.1611.social, which powers NCD's BibleBot)
After I was done I just moved back home and acclimated.
regardless of setting up proxies or additional servers, running your own instance you can get around 40g of storage good for around 30k posts for like $50/hr.
Oh, I ran 1611.social for just over a year before moving back to NCD. My mission with that was complete and I'm relatively familiar with fedi administration.
I meant specifically adding some kind of ffprobe shim in between uploaded media (and incoming from mediaproxy) to make it where iPhone can see webm, and Linux can see HEVC in browser.
Have it handy? We ran into an issue a few weeks ago with a user that uploaded HEVC and only like 10% of our users could view it (Windows with HEVC codecs)
@Tony@georgia@MCMLXVIIOTG@MadrePappagallo@tyler I seriously do not understand why small companies pay Salesforce so much money for something they could design in Microsoft Access for free* (they're already paying for office 365).
@Tony@georgia@MCMLXVIIOTG@MadrePappagallo@tyler Very based. hopefully it's working perfectly still. I setup email stuff for a small business once and the host kept blocking him after 100 because they didn't want to get listed as a spam service. Like it's not even a problem if you have an opt out and follow CANSPAM rules.
@Tony@georgia@MCMLXVIIOTG@MadrePappagallo@tyler Oh I have a bit of an idea friend... I taught myself a lot about a lot of things because I kept getting told "you can't do that" or "that will cost a fortune" by people trying to take advantage of me. My bullheadedness is off the charts.
