Supposing, hypothetically, some malignant force were to have deliberately set up an industry or organisation solely dedicated to the clandestine, insidious elimination of all life on Earth, then one really couldn't do a much better job than the fossil fuel industry. It is destroying the bioshpere and has to boot captured political life around the globe to faciliate this goal

It's almost Dark Forest territory, isn't it: no sooner have we taken the first steps towards being a space faring civilisation, landing on the Moon, than we tip into Earth overshoot (around 1974) and start trashing the stable Holocene climate we depend on at a rate only exceeded in the geological record when there's been an asteroid impact. The Trisolarans couldn't do better!clacke likes this. -

Emeritus Prof Christopher May (chrismayla6@zirk.us)'s status on Thursday, 21-Mar-2024 21:26:50 JST Emeritus Prof Christopher May The fossil fuel sector (and associated lobby) are playing both ends to the middle;
spending extensive political resources undermining the transition to green & sustainable energy, they're now arguing that the (relative) slowness of this transition confirms countries should stick with fossil fuel based energy provision.
This pretty much sums up both the corrosive character of the industry and the betrayal of the future by this generation!
