During the Carter years there was a prelude to the Reagan tax cuts passed by the Democratic congress and signed by Jimmy Carter. It undid some of the damage done by the extreme left wing wave of legislation that hit between 1965-1976. It was an attempt to abort the right wing wave they knew was coming.
Trump 2024 will play the same role that Reagan played in 1980. The acceptable 'rebel' opposition. After a few million deportations, who knows?, he might even sign an amnesty!

@that_groyper @SoylentGroyper @judgedread it's because everyone is still clinging to liberalism, and "race doesn't matter" is part of the core of liberal universalism.

@SoylentGroyper @judgedread Well that's also part of the issue when you remove race and culture from the picture. The U.S. used to have quota systems, and while I never dug too deep into it, it seemed to be working out pre-1970s, as the U.S. was almost 90% white for its entire run up until then.
Even with violence against whites from nonwhites being constantly exposed, you will still see rightwingers go out of their way to say it's "not about race" before anyone else.
Despite what happened in 2016, the framework for the right and the GOP is still "race doesn't matter" for some bizarre reason. I think it has shifted a bit, but it ebbs and flows because faggot boomers and nu-boomers (like conservatives in their 20s that walk around in a suit and bow tie or some shit) will constantly push back against race realism. So that's why when you bring up the European immigrant issue that you just did, people ON THE RIGHT will be like "Why does that matter?"

@judgedread Yeah, I think Trump will do almost nothing in his second term if he wins. His main goals will be staying out of legal trouble and golfing. He won't be some firebrand, the exact opposite, and he will be very susceptible to being taken advantage of by Democrats. I can definitely see him leaning towards a lot of centrist positions that "bring the country together" since he so desperately wants to be liked by everyone, including Dems in Congress. He'll be the ultimate bozo.

@that_groyper @judgedread what none of all the right wingers don't understand, is that some elements of society (and immigrants) have to SUFFER for things to get better. They all believe in an easy way out, just make a better trade deal with Chyna... no cuts in welfare or social security necessary. Mass deportation may be what Trump wants to do, but it will stop immediately when the inevitable mass protests organized by the Left shut down cities. Most right-wing politicians (in the US and Europe right now) have this consensus that _only_ the criminal migrants need to be deported, all the others (99%) are future workers to pay taxes to pay for boomers social security, these will all be allowed to stay and get benefits. Trump is completely naive and delusional about "legal immigration", most immigration from white countries has been cut off, only people with skills and signed job contracts with US companies may come to the US, many are on 20 year waiting lists, never getting a replay from the US for their application. The only significant immigration to the US and Europe is by coming illegally and cheating, not "legal" like Trump believes.

@that_groyper @SoylentGroyper @judgedread the progressive version is "race doesn't matter, unless you're white, then you're evil ( which is the reason outcomes aren't equal making race look like it matters )"
