Paul Cantrell (inthehands@hachyderm.io)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 02:39:38 JST Paul Cantrell My pet peeve: people adding more and more and more content in the hope of eventually having a point. Has exactly the same problem as adding more and more code in the hope that it eventually has no bugs.
I •want• to know what you think is important. I don’t need a meandering firehose; I have internet access already. If I’m listening to you, then your focus, your sense of where the heart of the matter sits, is likely •why• I’m listening.

Paul Cantrell (inthehands@hachyderm.io)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 02:49:24 JST Paul Cantrell @Oggie I’ve always loved that quote! I don’t know who Clemmin is…? The earliest attestation is Pascal, but it’s unclear whether he’s the originator:

Oggie (oggie@woof.group)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 02:49:25 JST Oggie @inthehands I feel like we need to condense Clemmin's famous phrase down to a koan or more clearly universal phrasing, since it applies so much.
'I am sorry about the length of this letter. If I had more time I would have written you a shorter one.'

I appreciate 99 Percent Invisible so much (at least the reportorial episodes; they also do interviews and conversations with a different flavor) for their exquisite editing. Long or short, they never make me feel like I’m wasting my time.I also appreciate The Memory Palace, which is perfectly happy to make its episodes be short little gems.

Mage Moss (trying it on) (cyrus@zirk.us)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 02:50:43 JST Mage Moss (trying it on) @inthehands My understanding is that youtube videos pass a certain monetization threshold at 8 minutes, which is why a one minute idea is presented after several minutes of blather.
For podcasts, how many of them have more than five minutes of actual information or new developments? Yet the makers need to make it seem like they’ve got a whole show, in fact a channel full of whole shows, so you will subscribe.

Take this one: https://thememorypalace.us/no-116842/Sweeps me away, almost brought me to tears the first time I heard it, feels relaxed and slow and contemplative and full of breathing space…and clocks in barely over 10 min before the long fade-out.

And really if I look closely, does anything bother me as much as the fields I personally favor?

cultdev (cultdev@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Mar-2024 23:47:43 JST cultdev @inthehands i can live with that. but as a misophone i really need people to use a de-esser, remove all the wet mouth sounds, and/or drink some dang apple juice before pressing record
(and i will feel that all the AI hype was at least a little bit justified if it can bring about popular software that does all of that cleanup work flawlessly)
