Now that HDMI has rejected open-source, normalize DisplayPort on everything. It's open-source, the port is easier to plug in and locks into place, allows for video through USB-C (HDMI doesn't) and it supports the same high resolutions and refresh rates as HDMI. It should be way more common, at least on TVs, consoles, and laptops.

@alcinnz @TempestDerg Yeah, DP definitely does not meet the bar for "open source", it's still proprietary just with more favorable terms than HDMI.

@TempestDerg Personally I'd prefer a spec which laypeople like myself had permission to read, but... DisplayPort might be the best option right now!

@TempestDerg @thomholwerda except DP it's not as cool as it sounds, it does DRM as well…

@izaya @TempestDerg @chx I had to regularly run 10m+ HDMI cables at one point, and it required a signal booster to actually be usable, so theoretical affordability of longer cables ends up not being that much of a killer feature.

@chx @TempestDerg gonna be honest I'd never even considered a video cable that long, my TV computer lives under my TV, and has a like 50cm DP cable

Guess if they're well-shielded you don't need to do anything to get longer cables though! How does it compare to DVI?

@izaya @TempestDerg I have certainly bashed HDMI more than once but let's face it: it allows for much longer passive cables which alas is a significant factor in home theaters. Like, you can get a 30ft HDMI cable for <$30 while such a cable in DisplayPort or USB C format is either active or optical and costs like $100+.

@TempestDerg there was never any reason to want to use HDMI, but now there's a real big reason not to want to, besides audio being flaky and wonky resolutions and a fragile cable and the lack of locking mechanism and-

@fbobraga This. Basically meaning that Linux will never get HDMI 2.1 support.
