     The 2deep4u shit is great when you're a teenager but when you're a grown mayun it gets tired. After a point it needs to stop having merely the allusion to depth, but the actual presence of it.

     @romin @deadheat yes, I didn't rewatch all of it on the movie night, but it's like the poster boy of that kind of anime of the era. The eps I watched again I've found boring and I know that all of the christian imagery is all fucking nonsense that means nothing

     @deadheat it's been waaaaay too fucking long since I've seen it and I've seen it pre-seasonal era when anime was new and exciting
     
     But IIRC it's one of *those* from the era, like Lain. We watched Lain recently. It's a similar mess and I really don't like these "2deep4u" anime anymore

     But the reality is that these shows are "2deep4u" slop for teenagers. It's actually slop pretending to be high art by obfuscating how meaningless the whole thing is by putting layers upon layers of nonsense, that people have treated as high art for ages but then are just finding out it's actually slop

     @coolboymew @deadheat @romin and by "2deep4u" you mean the imagery of cool designs, the nonlinear unraveling of characters, the poetry of the dialog, and everything that references a metanarrative?
     youre right that eva is nothing without these. but so is almost every narrative artistic work. theres a reason were okay with every fictional story following the same heros journey. art appreciation on narratives analyzes HOW the story is told, not just the plot.
     anything capable of being artful, can make for itself a vibe that is unique. anyone who can appreciate that vibe, can make for themself an interpretation that is unique.

"i put crosses in it because it looks cool" is exactly something a widely respected artfilm director like lynch or tarkovsky would say. but its different for anime because its "for teens" and because it exists within a slop genre? what the fuck is robocop then, just slop or 3deep5u arthouse? can something not be both? is it impossible to read into a childrens book for an adult interpretation?
