    It matters where the water comes from.

    Why does the loss of ice in Antarctica affect Northern Europe more than melt in Greenland?

    Apparently, many people are confused about how global and local sea level rise are not the same so I wrote a brief blog post to try and explain it.

    Posting again for the European morning crowd..

      Hi Ruth,

      I can't think of a more adequate person to ask the following.
      This post states that "the #Arctic #OceanIce is *not* considered to be a tipping point anymore."

      True?

      @HistoPol

      As @Ruth_Mottram points out, the answer to your question depends heavily on the used definition of the ‘tipping point’ term.
      It is indeed true that in the latest assessment of tipping points, the Global Tipping Points Report 2023, Arctic sea ice is not considered to be a tipping system. See this table from the report: https://global-tipping-points.org/section1/1-earth-system-tipping-points/1-2-tipping-points-in-the-cryosphere/1-2-2-current-state-of-knowledge-on-cryosphere-tipping-points/

        from University of Exeter Design Studio
        Key messages Recommendations Summary Tipping points exist across the Earth system – the interconnected systems that support life on this planet, including the cryosphere (ice-bound domains), biosphere (the living world), ocean and atmosphere. It is often assumed that environmental systems respond relatively linearly to human-driven pressures (such as climate change, habitat destruction and pollution). However, […]
