@davidaugust :) It was the long-ago days when I did internships for NASA and studied rocket engines. Then I figured out how much harm combustion products were doing to the biosphere and I switched to studying global warming. Then I became an author. Fast forward: now I'm writing hopeful climate fiction. Cuz we need stories like that, badly. We're not doomed, but we're in deep trouble. @Mabande @lkanies

@Mabande I did my PhD research on the formation of sulfate aerosols at altitude from aircraft engine exhaust and I'm here to definitively say there is NO good impact from that, long or short term (despite whatever cooling effect might result) — but boy do the geoengineering enthusiasts love that idea. #TechWontSaveUs

@susankayequinn @Mabande @lkanies that’s so cool you did that research!

@susankayequinn @Bryan@macaw.social @davidaugust @lkanies While there is some science to back up that polluting particles might have a cooling effect, they're in _no_ way "good in the long run".
But the fossil lobby will of course obfuscate. -

@Bryan @davidaugust @lkanies I literally had someone question whether Biden's new air pollution rules (which tighten particulate emissions) were really good "in the long run" because they thought that pollution would help counter global warming.
I don't know how we arrived at 2024 with this much confusion about pollution impacts... oh wait, yes I do. The relentless fossil fuel propaganda.

You mean the chapters about global cooling in science class were wrong?! I was taught air pollution from coal and oil would block the sun and we’d have an eternal winter! We needed nuclear energy to stop the burning of fossil fuels… 😮 -

@Bryan It could be part of the explanation for why global warming slowed down its increase in the 60s and 70s. Of course, we reduced *that* pollution for good reasons too.

@ai6yr @KarenStrickholm @davidaugust guess what i was taught in 1981: spontaneous generation of weevils in flour. Admittedly in a "Home Economics" class, not science, but still. (Yes, this was the moment i lost all faith in school.)

That would ruin the comments from the people who say: "well, *WE* were taught in school..."

I can't pinpoint many facts that have since been proven wrong (science is all about proving stuff wrong, so I don'tcount it), but I can identify a LOT of Australia's history that was ignored or deliberately swept under the carpet 😡
