I bet you that 99.9% of the people who recommends minetest dont play minetest. They tried it once or twice and never touched it again. But only recommends it because FOSS.

The Steam deck is quite a niche device in the grand scheme of things, most people do not have a Steam Deck. You're probably biased by the people around you. -

oshy (ocean@raru.re)'s status on Saturday, 17-Feb-2024 20:16:04 JST oshy @enigmatico Yeah but the main issue is that Java is locked down to only PC, Bedrock is on phones & tablets and game consoles which is where most people play
I feel like Minecraft is a struggle to play because of this kinda thing and any desire to play minecraft with pals devolves into this argument and we can never pick a version of the game to actually play
Vs playing something like Lego Fortnite where it's just the same on every platform and it's simple with no server faffery and easy crossplay

【Ξnigmatico】:misskey: (enigmatico@mk.absturztau.be)'s status on Saturday, 17-Feb-2024 20:16:05 JST 【Ξnigmatico】:misskey: @ocean@raru.re Minecraft is 20€/$. Its cheap. If you bought it during the beta, you would habe paid 10, or even 5 during the Alpha. Its not, by any means, expensive. Of course, piracy exists.
There are many versions but people mostly plays the Java version because every other version sucks. Plus, most people has both Java and Bedrock. But Bedrock is terrible compared to Java. Bedrock is Minecraft + Microsoft monetisation. Nobody cares about bedrock, except for the kiddies.
Plus, you can run your own server very easily and for free, if you know where to get a freee VPS. Im running one right now. -

oshy (ocean@raru.re)'s status on Saturday, 17-Feb-2024 20:16:06 JST oshy @enigmatico I've played extensively on a couple Minetest servers with some friends
It's not that bad really
It's easier to play with pals than Minecraft since Minecraft has a paywall and there are three different versions that aren't compatible and you have to buy each separately

Damn.
20 GBP is cheap, but your freedom is worth much more.
I quite enjoy minetest. -

And a lot of people has a laptop as well. I remind you both that Minecraft is also the most sold game ever. They also bundle Java version with Bedrock. There is no excuse. Period.
The only reason to recommend Minetest over Minecraft is because its FOSS. There is no other reason. And most people who recommends minetest dont actually play minetest. Plus, if you play Minetest, you already have a computer anyways. See? There is no excuse.
