@thomasfuchs I would love so much for Apple to make a 3D iPhone and drag us into another cycle of that. The last generation of them was just not quite ready like the HTC Evo 3D. But was getting really good.

I have an IPS panel "New" Nintendo 3DS and it is a genuinely fantastic experience. A little more dev time and I think it could be solved.

I didn't think the Google glass would catch on, but I always thought that it was a better form-factor effort than anything else that came after it.

Full immersion is cool for a game (interactive movies) but not practical as a heavy use device. Phones are almost perfect as they aren't very obtrusive. And don't cloud out reality.

@thomasfuchs I could see that, but it would present an interesting dilemma. Presumably you would want landscape 3D for rear photos and video, but facetime is portrait. So the display would need to be capable of 3D in both axis (I'm not aware of any device or development capable of that).

Maybe just facetime could be done with 3D cameras and then use the tracking to fake a 3D display à la Johnny Lee Wiiimote tech demos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC_KKxAuLQw

@thomasfuchs Nilay Patels review for The Verge did say that the AVP is the best headset that has ever been built and yet it needs to be 50 times better to be able to relay an experience on par with the real world. That is so far off from what we have now, that he thinks that something like the AVP, that is using cameras and screens to project the real world, is a dead end wrt the road to AR.

Interesting discussion on his review and feed back from industry:

@thomasfuchs Apple has been pretty clear that what they want is in fact not a VR headset but an AR glasses like thing. However, the technology is not yet there to enable that. I believe that the AVP is much more aimed at developers than consumers; Apple is building a new concept (spatial computing) and they need help to develop bothe concept and the apps to fill it.
