"Imagine easily replacing batteries and other components yourself, extending the phone’s lifespan without needing specialized technical knowledge. This, coupled with seven years of updates, would truly be a game-changer."

What we need is innovation in order to create a phone where you can remove the battery. This would be true innovation: doing something thought impossible, doing something that's never been done before. What a challenge!

with only mild exaggeration, if you want to isolate true evil in the economic structure of modern societies, its the advertising clan

they are experts in manipulation, triggering base instincts, creating addictions and insatiable demand

think e.g., fashion: the ritualistic churning of clothes every season because "you must"

once they got their hands on tech the dehumanization and mass abuse was inevitable

Oh yeh. 100% I would say the advertising industry is more dangerous and damaging than the oil industry. Who's developing AI? Ad agencies like Google and Facebook and Microsoft Bing. So, it's going to get a lot worse.

Advertising is not a "superficial" issue here, it is a crucial part of the whole scheme.

Tackle planned (i.e., actual) obsolescence before banning advertising. Banning superficial things is generally a political mis-step.

Honestly, I'm not even sure how much innovation it would take to get here. Many currently use 7yo phones.

What if in addition to these changes (all of which I support) we also shift our focus. What if we decided that we didn't need our phone to be the most advanced tech on the block?

There is a lot to be done in the demand side. Ban advertising new phones (or tax it heavily) so we don't all feel like we need the tech to keep marching onwards leaving old ones feeling outdated.

The fashion's industry disastrous footprint is well documented. 85% of clothes is dumped every year https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/01/fashion-industry-carbon-unsustainable-environment-pollution/

Consumer demand does not come out of nowhere. Beyond a few basics, it is more or less arbitrary, culture defined and largely engineered. This is well documented. There is no chicken/egg, it is a cyclical process that started circa 1890 and never stopped. Read e.g., Land of Desire by William Leach.

I'm no fan of advertisers, but are you sure this isn't an urban legend? Do you know anyone who actually buys all new clothes every year?

Think of other environment-wrecking insatiable demands: do they advertise 2-acre McMansions?

The idea that advertising brainwashes consumers rests on a capitalist myth: that consumer demand drives supply. But no -- providers determine (and limit) the options and folks have to choose among them.

if the system was in any shape or form long-term sustainable one might think twice about condemning it to eternal hell. in the end lifestyles and cultures are arbitrary.

      but it isn't.

people are chronically psychologically stressed to fit in the work-earn-consume cycle and the environment is driven to annihilation to accommodate an ever increasing footprint.

patching this piece of broken software will not be easy

@phiofx @gerrymcgovern @jackofalltrades @jill_the_pill @FantasticalEconomics marketing and propaganda are twins. The vast majority of mass media advertising is manipulative enough to be considered coercive abuse.

It's also almost impossible to escape.

The most evil thing about it is that we're know on a third (or fourth?) generation of society where everyone thinks it's normal and good to soak in an environment where every second has at least one ad in your attention.
