@dushman @lanodan @a1ba @nyoom @mischievoustomato yes but with shenanigans. oracle dingused the license [on purpose iirc] so it can't be mainlined. you have to do your own kernel build. its not legal to have it prebundled.

How to quickly know that your distro fucked up on package management and resolving dependencies.

@icedquinn @nyoom @dushman @lanodan @mischievoustomato @a1ba OpenZFS uses DKMS, so you don't need to compile your own kernel, but you do need to keep an eye out when updating to make sure the kernel you're using is compatible with your ZFS package (really only a problem with bleeding edge distros).

@Coyote @nyoom @dushman @lanodan @mischievoustomato @a1ba there was some legalese about why you can't distribute gpl and some non gpl stuff together as a vendor. i remember it being really stupid and somewhat antithetical.

      OSLv3 creates no such issues.

@lanodan @nyoom @icedquinn @dushman @mischievoustomato @a1ba It's not really the distro's fault (unless they included OpenZFS themselves) as OpenZFS has it's own package repos for a lot of distros because of licensing.

@Coyote @nyoom @icedquinn @dushman @mischievoustomato @a1ba Nope, don't mix shit up, the license incompatibility doesn't means you cannot have both in a single repository, it only means you're in a weird grey area when distributing the two explicitly bundled (such as in an ISO image).
And in practice… probably even more safe than Fair Use is, GPL incompatibilities are all over the place.

@lanodan @nyoom @dushman @mischievoustomato @Coyote @a1ba its unlikely the FSF or linux foundation would give much of a shit. oracle might have standing and is not known for being friendly though.

@Coyote @a1ba @dushman @icedquinn @mischievoustomato @nyoom And even with third-party repositories being involved, you should still be able to correctly resolve dependencies, although that goes harder when things like older packages aren't easily available.

@icedquinn @nyoom @dushman @mischievoustomato @Coyote @a1ba I don't think Oracle can sue, because it's not the CDDL that's being violated (it's a weak copyleft license after all even proprietary would be fine), it's the GPL of the Linux kernel.

And I'd doubt anyone could sue, like you'd force to release code? It's already released and everyone knows it's effectively never going to be under a compatible license (What you want to sue Oracle? Of all the corporations?).
Money? I guess don't sell the bundle.

@Coyote @nyoom @icedquinn @dushman @mischievoustomato @a1ba There's absolutely 0 reasoning here, they just state that it's not available and could entirely be from a consideration of Arch themselves.

And consider that distros tend to lean heavily on the safe side of licensing, see patents and anything that could be used to circumvent DRM (like printing a PDF).

@lanodan @nyoom @icedquinn @dushman @mischievoustomato @a1ba That's OpenZFS' own reasoning why it isn't included in Arch's official repo. I don't care enough about licensing autism to comment on whether their reasoning is sound.
