   furthermore my point was that lotr was not even remotely forgotten in popular culture when the movies came out, simply because it directly inspired so much of it (doesn't matter if it's lowbrow trash or w/e

     it (and its entire extended universe) is also a story about elves and dwarves and wizards and magic and gods and heroes who go slay evil with magical swords, regardless of the highbrow themes baked into the package
     
     and without it we would not have fantasy as a genre as we understand it, so yes it has everything to do with pulp fantasy
